Figure It Out By Phone

Laura Schaefer

If the eyes are the windows into the soul, our voices just might be the key to everything else. Studies show that information on our height, weight, level of attractiveness, ability to be faithful, and much more can all be revealed in the sound of our voice. So the next time you embark on a first phone call with a new sweetie, listen for more than just what he or she says. You might find out all you need to know about a potential match…before the first date. (Suddenly, “You had me at hello” has a whole new meaning.)

The ear: a surprisingly accurate instrument
Sure, photos may seem to speak a thousand words. But according to one study, subjects can guess someone’s age, height, and weight through voice alone as accurately as someone who’s shown a photo! Personality also shines through: In a study at Stanford University involving 72 participants, voices that were louder and faster were correctly judged to belong to the extroverted, while voices that were softer and slower were correctly judged to go with the introverted.

The eye -candy/ear-candy connection
If you dig the sound of someone’s voice, chances are you will like what you see face to face as well. According to psychology professor Gordon Gallup Jr. at SUNY Albany, people who sound attractive are usually conventionally attractive. In the study, 149 men and women rated the sound of participants’ voices on a 10-point scale, then underwent body measurements. Results found that highly rated voices in women matched with slim waists, while highly rated voices in men matched with broad shoulders both considered appealing qualities in the looks department.

Pleasing voice = player?
Eye candy, however, isn’t the end of the story. Not only do people with pleasing voices usually wind up being attractive, they also have more sex partners and are more likely to be unfaithful. So, be warned, if you like what you hear, you may be playing with fire.

Your date cannot tell a lie
According to a Harvard study, liars give their fib away in their voice and all it takes is 20 seconds. Participants who listened to two 10 second clips of doctors being sued for malpractice were able to correctly separate guilty parties from innocent ones. How? A tone that showed “low concern levels” and “high dominance” were the most reliable indicators. So the next time your gut tells you someone’s being blasé or bullying take note: He or she could be fudging the truth.

Expressive men get the girl
We’ve always kind of known that men who speak in a monotone put us to sleep, but now, science backs this up. Research shows that men who can widely vary the pitch and tone in their voice have more success with women than those who do not.

The deeper her voice, the bigger her paycheck?
Hey guys find a deep, Demi-Moore style voice incredibly sexy? It may also suggest she can bring home the bacon as well. Women who are in or seeking positions of power in the workplace pitch their voices lower to sound more authoritative, according to a new study that analysed the quality of women’s voices over time (and found that on average, women’s voices have deepened considerably since the 1940s).
